We live in a world where one must assess whether they can protect themselves from physical violence. You must start with prevention by being conscious of your surroundings and not setting yourself up as a vulnerable target. You must always be prepared to give the attacker what they want in the form of any material possessions. If the situation goes beyond that then the louder, the better. Get vocal so as to bring attention to yourself. This situation can happen in literally seconds so knowing the major points of pain which are the eyes, nose, neck, groin and knees. You need to be prepared to strike any part of the body that is the most convenient without getting closer to your attacker. There are many resources to sharpen your own self defense plan and it is highly recommended that you be proactive in this education.
