Hi there!
Welcome to this week’s Alive and Kicking, the newsletter for martial artists over 40.
Today I share with you a good friend’s attitude to turning 40, and a selection of martial arts stories from the web. It’s a bit of a shorter edition than usual, but I link out to some good stuff!

D’arcy Mellsop is a really good friend of mine, and once was one of my Taekwon-Do students. He’s always been one of those people who stands out from the crowd. I can still remember exactly where I was when he first contacted me about Taekwon-Do training. He called me on my mobile phone while I was visiting another city. It was a brief conversation, but when I got off the phone I said to my wife “Wow, that guy was something else!”
Well, he continues to amaze me with his attitude to life!
The other day he posted this on Facebook. I loved it so much I asked him if I could share it with you!
I’m about to turn 40 and I’ve got a problem with it, and it is this: I don’t feel it at all.
Age, you have to work harder to catch me as I workout knowing that you are chasing me.
You won’t catch me.
I’m too fit for you, and getting fitter.
I eat too well for you and I’m eating better all the time.
I’m too strong for you.
Out.
Woohoo… love it!

Today, I’m going to do something a little differen.
I want to present here a selection of stories that I have recently found on the big wide internet about older students achieving in the martial arts.
First is a video of Arthur Bondy, an 81 year old who tried the gym, but instead ended up at Karate lessons instead…
Secondly there is news of Tamar Springer who is a mother of two, and a successful and very busy businesswoman, but still finds time to do Karate – and excel at it. This to me is the whole essence of why I am creating this site. This time of life for many people can be amongst the busiest, and introducing a martial art into the mix (or even just maintaining practice) can be a real challenge at time. People like Tamar, who have taken the step out of their busy lives to get started in the martial arts, are a true inspiration to me.
And finally today, there is a 68 year old getting stuck into his martial arts training. Blindfolded. This is a man who is not taking his training lightly, and it’s definitely worth watching. (I have already posted this on Facebook a while back, but it’s worth watching again)

Pain! We will soon be releasing a series of articles on Pain. I say “We” but I really have not had much to do with it myself, so I shouldn’t take the credit! Craig Hart has been working away on this, and is doing an awesome job. We will release it as a series because the amount of work he has done is phenomenal, and it won’t fit into your inbox in one newsletter!

Remember, if you have anything you want to say, ask or contribute, you can drop me an email or leave your comments on Facebook. You can also comment directly on the website.
Also, I am always keen to hear from people who want to share their story in the readers stories section. Anything goes… how you got into martial arts, why you stay in martial arts, or what’s stopping you from martial arts. New belt promotions or other exciting news is welcome too.
I look forward to hearing from you.
All the best!
Brett
