Welcome to edition six of Alive and Kicking, the newsletter
for martial artists over 40.

Many people believe that to get involved in the martial arts you
need to be pretty fit before you start. This is a shame as I
believe it stops many people from even trying a martial art.
Of course when you first watch or consider joining a martial art
you will have all sorts of pre-conceived ideas about martial
arts, and often based on nothing more than a few movies or TV
programs.
And even when you watch a martial art “live” for the first time,
your attention will naturally be drawn towards the instructor or
senior students, who have been training for years or even
decades.
So of course it can seem intimidating, and thoughts of self-doubt
will go through many a beginners mind.
As I said above, this is a bit of a shame, because this barrier
is probably stopping many people from trying a martial art.
Of course you don’t have to be super-fit or young to get started.
The fitness will come with time. Sorry – I can’t say that about
your youth… that’s gone 🙂
The main thing is to just get stuck in and go at your own pace.
Keep pushing yourself that little bit harder, and the fitness
will come.

The reason I’m thinking about this at the moment is that I had a
conversation just yesterday with someone in his late 40s who told
me he’d thought about doing martial arts for ages, but he now
thinks he’s “missed the boat” and was too old. He’d watched some
classes with his son, but never thought that he’d be able to join
in.
And try as I might to convince him that he could get started he
just wasn’t going to listen.
It’s definitely food for thought. I’m really interested in your
story of how you got started, especially if you got started at an
older age. Did you have doubts about getting started? How did you
overcome them?

Did you know that fruit is making people fat?
Here is an excerpt from a news article I saw today…
An apple a day is supposed to keep the doctor away, yet a small
but passionate group of medics believes fresh fruit is in part
to blame for the extra kilos some of us are carrying.
It is a controversial concept that riles nutritionists but Rod
Tayler’s theory that restricting fresh fruit in the diet can
result in weight loss has been borne out by the experiences of
participants in a trial he is running at the Epworth Hospital
in Melbourne.
Dr Tayler believes the biggest driver behind the rapid rise in
the nation’s girth is sugar, not fat. Fruit, he says, is full
of it – a 150 gram apple contains four teaspoons of sugar.
He acknowledges that regular consumption is fine for anyone
without a weight problem, but believes fruit needs to be cut
out to lose kilos, along with alcohol and refined
carbohydrates.
You just can’t win can you?
