Welcome to this week’s Alive and Kicking, the newsletter for martial artists over 40.

This is going to be a really short newsletter today, and it’s a day late too! The past few days have been a bit crazy for me as I try to tie up the loose ends on one project, and also look to get started in a new business. So things have been really hectic.

So today rather than bring you a full edition of the newsletter I am bringing you a selection of articles I found on the web that I found interesting and I think you will too.

First up, from shotokanmaster.com … A view that training in the martial arts is a long term (life long) activity…

Relax, adjust and move naturally. It only takes 30 years to get there.

My Sensei has often told me that it takes 30 years of training before you actually begin learning your Martial Art. This 30 years is comprised of 10 years each of learning to relax, learning to adjust and learning to move naturally.

Relax

During the first decade, we must learn to relax. Instead of punching and kicking with tense neck muscles and teeth gritted, we need to learn how to strike or block with loose muscles. Tightening at the last moment, at the moment of impact is the key to speed, power and good technique. An overactive mind and tight body is not something that will give you the results you are after.

And how about this 79 year old gaining his green belt!(from nj.com)

If you were impressed when 79-year-old Joe Camisa of Somerville achieved a yellow belt in karate last winter, you’ll want to know that he has since earned an orange belt and is now the proud possessor of a green belt.

Helping the retired fur tanner work his way up the karate ladder is his sensei, David Laggini, whose karate school is based in the Somerville Eagles Clubhouse in Bridgewater.

MMA is not everybody’s cup of tea, but whether or not you like it, you just know that to step into the cage you have to be fit, strong and have huge spirit. Here’s a 50 year old that’s getting back into MMA after a four year break. (from sherdog.com)

Maurice Smith is 50 years old, but he believes he can still beat some of the best fighters in the world.

On March 30, he returned to MMA action for the first time in nearly four years, and he didn’t disappoint. The former UFC heavyweight champion picked apart Jorge Cordoba before knocking him out in the third round of their matchup at Resurrection Fighting Alliance 2.

“It was good to get back in there and play the game,” Smith told the Sherdog Radio Network’s “Savage Dog Show.” “Age seemed to be everybody’s big concern, or the issue with everybody, but for me, it was just another fight. The guy was a tough kid. … He was above his level, but again, his heart definitely matched mine.”
